DuPont™ Corian® is a solid, non-porous, homogeneous surfacing material that is an blend of natural minerals and pure acrylic polymer. This material is composed of +/- 1/3 acrylic resin (also known as PolyMethylMethAcrylate or PMMA) and +/- 2/3 natural minerals. The main mineral is Aluminium TriHydrate (ATH) derived from bauxite, an ore from which aluminium is produced.
It is a synthetic material – born of human imagination and exploration – and the result of a reflection upon the demands of design.
RESISTANT
Since its introduction in 1967, DuPont™ Corian® has proved itself to be a remarkable durable material that is easy to live with.
- It cannot delaminate and stands up well to daily wear and tear.
- It resists most of the impacts, nicks, cuts that occur in heavy traffic areas. Nicks and scratches can be buffed out with a Scotch-Brite pad or orbital sander.

HYGIENIC
- Due to its non-porous quality, Corian® is approved for use in specialized environments, such as laboratories and hospitals. For the record, when it was sold for the first time in 1967, Corian® was originally developed as a material to replace human bones.
- It is solid through its entire thickness and can be fabricated with inconspicuous seams, rendering its surface hygienic. Surface of this material does not support the growth of bacteria or fungi.

REPAIRABLE
- Surfaces in Corian® are renewable, meaning they can be fully restored with ordinary mild abrasive cleansers and a scouring pad. For example, cigarette burns can be easily removed in this way.
- Damage caused by abuse can usually be repaired on the site without having completely replace the material.
INCONSPICUOUS JOINTS
- Pieces of Corian® can be glued together inconspicuously to create a seamless look, giving virtually unlimited design possibilities for surfaces.
- Long counters, for example, can be easily made in pieces in workshop and then joined together at the installation site. Edges can be built up to look thicker.

THERMOFORMABLE
DuPont™ Corian® can be thermoformed in wooden or metal moulds at controlled temperature (by heating it to 300°F (150°C) in order to create various 2D and 3D design objects. Embossing effects can also be created using Bas Relief technique.

HEAT RESISTANCE
- While Corian® is heat resistant, as with all countertop materials, it is important to minimize direct heat exposure to protect your surface and investment.
- It is highly recommended not to place hot pots, pans, etc. directly on the countertop surface.
- Always use heat trivets or hot pads when placing hot objects on any surface. Always use a trivet under portable heat generating appliances such as a toaster oven. Allow cookware to cool before placing it into a Corian®sink. And those who have “Zepter” products should be rally careful because as it was written before, at 300°F (150°C) temperature this material deforms.
COLOUR
The colours of DuPont™ Corian® allow for an almost unlimited working palette. You can choose any colour from more than 100 colours that are available. Corian® can also be used as inlays, accents, or as a versatile complement to other materials lika metal, wood, stone, etc.

It can blow up your microwave if there is metal on the plate (like a gold trim) so I would not recommend trying it. Unless you can afford a new microwave that is.
