pencils, product sketching, sketch, drawingPencils are widely used in id sketching and there are many brands that offers them in all kind of colors and shapes.

A pencil is a writing implement or art medium usually constructed of a narrow, solid pigment core inside a protective casing. The case prevents the core from breaking, and also from marking the user’s hand during use.

Pencils create marks via physical abrasion, leaving behind a trail of solid core material that adheres to a sheet of paper or other surface.

Most pencil cores are made of graphite mixed with a clay binder, leaving grey or black marks that can be easily erased. Graphite pencils are used for both writing and drawing, and the result is durable: although writing can usually be removed with an eraser, it is resistant to moisture, most chemicals, ultraviolet radiation and natural aging.

Pencils hardness

Hardness is one the important parameters for paint and coatings. Pencil hardness is a measure of resistance to scratch and wear by external forces. The most common pencil hardness is 2B. The term”2B” refers to how soft or hard the graphite is.

It goes from light (hard) to dark (soft):

9H  8H  7H  6H  5H  4H  3H  2H  H  F  HB  B  2B  3B  4B  5B  6B  7B  8B

  • Verithin colored pencils are smaller with harder pigment. The pencils tips can be sharpened to a very fine point, and the harder pigment makes these pencils more useful for a large amount of detail work without the need to be continuously resharpened. This not only makes them a great companion to the premier pencil sets, but also allows them to be used with other mediums, such as markers, ink, pastels, and others.
  • Regular (Thick) Prismacolor pencils are with soft core and they blends smooth and nicely. Pencils have nice tin, forprofessional artists. Also, you can create high contrast with small effort. The softer lead allows for different shading techniques.

Another definite advantage to the Prismacolor pencils is that they can blend on a variety of surfaces, not just regular paper. They even work on wood and plastic film.

Erasers

Protect your sketches and line drawings by using the proper eraser when needed. Do not use a standard pencil eraser as that will damage your drawing or sketching paper. Instead, use an eraser designed specifically for the graphite pencils and other drawing pencils, a mead gum eraser. It looks rather stretchy and gummy, but it is wonderful for your sketches and line drawings, as it leaves no marks or residue.

I use pencils for shading and to give some color to a shape when I know that if I use a marker, it will make it look bad. You can check out this sketch from August 9. You can see that I was using an orange pencil with an orange marker. These two materials blended together pretty good. Experiment, try different pencils and brands and you will find the perfect pencils for yourself!
